We humans have an unexplainable urge to uncover the mysteries of our past. So it made total sense that companies stepped right in to shake things up—literally and figuratively.

A few years ago, the world was obsessed with ancestry DNA services. Everyone was eager to spit into a tube, send it off, and await the revelation of their mysterious genetic roots. The hype was palpable; it was the ultimate treasure hunt, minus the treasure and plus a lot of unexpected family drama.

The excitement was short-lived. As people began to receive their results, they quickly realized that some truths are better left unspoken. Like finding out your sibling isn't actually your sibling or that your lineage includes a dubious character or two. It's the genetic version of opening Pandora's box, but with more saliva and fewer mythical creatures.
